| Masters Paranormal Classification System | |
| Developed in 1951 by Warren Masters as part of a British governmental inquiry, it was later adopted by other countries as a standard for classifying paranormals. It has gone through several modifications. For instance, Epsilon was a theoretical category until the 1970s (although the first Epsilons were not public knowledge until 1980). It is estimated that, by current progression, there are likely Thetas in existence; to date, none have been officially reported. | |
| Power Level | |
| Alpha (A) Augmentations minor or not considered appreciably useful. Roughly half of all paras are at this level. Examples: Jane Chester can change her skin color various shades of purple. Mike Nesbit is immune to snake venom. | |
| Beta (Β) Augmentation near human maxima, or simulate use of tools (firearms, hand weapons, telescopes, camouflage clothes, etc). Examples: Thomas Greenwich can see into the ultraviolet and infrared range. Viktor Checkov can lift 470 kg | |
| Gamma (Γ) Augmentation beyond human abilities; multiple classes of augmentations. Examples: Strong Arm can lift over 2 tonnes. Wassermann can hold his breath for 15 minutes while swimming underwater at 15 knots. | |
| Delta (Δ) Augmentation far beyond human abilities. Example: The Kraken could swim to abyssal depths without protective or breathing gear. | |
| Epsilon (Ε) Augmentation has potential to affect strategic regional security. Example: Little Boy could generate an EMP affecting a radius of 200 km, and released a explosion estimated at 12 Kt. | |
| Theta (Θ) Augmentation potentially acts on a global scale. Note: The Zeta was changed to Theta as the former caused some confusion with Zed in the field. Example: None known. Theoretical examples include: radically altering weather patterns across a hemisphere; the ability to freely travel through all time; changing the chemical composition of the Earth’s atmosphere. | |
| Power Type | |
| Often difficult to classify and rarely complete, these nonetheless give a general category for powers. Most have only one class, but the most powerful have several. | |
| C Exceptional physical combat abilities (e.g., martial arts, stealth) | I Superhuman intelligence |
| D Strength and/or durability | M Mind-affecting psionics (e.g., telepathy, mind control, precognition) |
| O Other Physiological Modification (e.g., gills, immunities) | P Physical-affecting psionics (e.g., telekinesis, pyrokinesis) |
| E Energy manipulation/projection. | S Superhuman movement (e.g., high speed, teleportation, flight) |
| G Abilities based on devices | T Transformative (e.g., color shifting, shape changing) |
| Z Unknown | |
| Legal Status | |
| Since the Owen-Parr Act, any use of augmentation without governmental sanction is considered a felony. | |
| 0 No criminal record | 3 Major felonies (e.g., murder, treason) |
| 1 Misdemeanors | 4 Trans felony (e.g., genocide) |
| 2 Felonies | Z Unknown |
| Threat Level | |
| The threat level combines the above information with the attitude and behavior of the para. A recent addition, this category has gone through several variants; the one presented is used by the United States PRA. The version used by the UN contains an additional character for the area of the threat (local, national, regional, global). Most law-abiding paras who have taken the Hyche vaccine are N or L, while any of the paras who have gone underground are almost never less than M. Paras with implants are generally W. | |
| L (Low) The para shows no inclination for violence or unlawful behavior; augmentations are weak. | |
| W (Watched) The para is inclined towards questionable or erratic behavior and/or augmentations are considerable. | |
| M (Mod.) The para is has a history of unlawful behavior and may prove difficult to control with conventional security forces. | |
| S (Severe) The para’s criminal activities are ongoing and require paranormal force to contain. | |
| C (Critical) The para presents an imminent threat to the government and/or has augmentations which could effect regional or global stability. | |
| N (Neutralized) The para is no longer a threat, either by death or loss of powers. | |
| Z Unknown | |
| Example | |
| Dan “the Ox” Stanford could lift 800 kg, run a marathon in 1h 46m, and withstand considerable physical punishment. Though he had no criminal record, he was considered a moderate threat by being a Delta class. Status: ΔDS0M | |
| When he refused to comply with the Owen-Parr Act, he was reclassified: Status: ΔDS2S | |
| He was involved in an altercation with police forces, resulting in $350,000 in property damage and ten officers in the hospital. When he publicly threatened to bring down every senator who signed the OP Act, Washington was placed on alert and Stanford’s threat level was upgraded to Critical. He was critically wounded by SWAT teams in Baltimore; a subsequent injection of the Hyche vaccine removed his augmentations, and he is currently institutionalized. Status: ΔDS3N | |
